Evening everyone!
If you’re looking for a proper Essex adventure that mixes stunning woodland walks, a bit of off-road chaos, and ends with fireworks lighting up the sky… then save this route because last weekend we smashed it!
We parked up at the FREE car park by Danbury Common (postcode CM3 4JL – the one next to the cricket pitch) and set off on a beautiful 13 km looped trail that takes in Danbury Commons, Lingwood Common, Backwarden Nature Reserve, and even a sneaky loop around Blake’s Wood. Autumn colours were on another level – oranges, reds and golds everywhere!

Route highlights:
- Crunchy leaves and proper muddy sections (wellies or good grizzlies essential!)
- Open heathland with 360° views across Essex
- Ancient woodland that feels a million miles from anywhere
- Spotted deer, a million squirrels, and Luna chasing every leaf known to man 🐕🍂
Halfway round we stumbled across the Essex 4×4 Land Rover club having an absolute blast in the muddiest field you’ve ever seen. Proper monsters sliding about – we stopped for ages watching them (and trying not to get sprayed!). Top lads, even gave Luna a fuss.
Then as the sun dropped, we headed to Southend Sea Front for their Bonfire Night fireworks – best display we’ve seen locally in years! Perfect way to end the day with a hot chocolate and sparklers.

Practical stuff:
- Distance: ~13 km (we did it in 3.5 hrs with photo stops)
- Difficulty: Moderate (a few hills and very muddy after rain)
- Parking: Free at Danbury Common (CM3 4JL) or opposite The Cricketers Arms
- Dog-friendly: 100% – Luna gave it five paws
- Toilets & coffee: The Cricketers Arms or Tea Rooms at Backwarden
I’ve filmed the whole day – muddy boots, Land Rover action, fireworks and all – check out the full vlog here:
